Spices and herbs were originally introduced to Zanzibar by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. They were brought from their colonies in South America and India!
During this half day tour you will learn how the town’s spices, herbs and fruits are grown and you have the opportunity to explore the lush spice farms of Zanzibar, renowned as the ‘spice island’. Your guide will explain how to the various ingredients are used in several dishes and beverages. Of course, the tour wouldn’t be complete without the opportunity to discover the taste and smell of the local spices and tropical fruits such as; clove, lemongrass, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, vanilla, coconut, papaya, chilli, black pepper, jackfruit, cardamom, cassava and oranges.
At the end of the tour we stop at a spice stall where freshly packaged spices can be purchased giving you the chance to take home some of Tanzania’s authentic flavours.
