During this half day tour, we’ll get a chance to explore Zanzibar’s main city; Stone Town. Stone Town is an excellent and fascinating example of a historical trading town on the coast of East Africa. It is the old part of the city of Zanzibar. The city has remained virtually intact and there are many beautiful buildings, which bear witness to the special history and culture of the city. Throughout the centuries, elements of the African, Arab and European cultures have been blended together, which makes this city truly stand out.
After breakfast, we pick you up around 08:30 to go to Stone Town. The guide will take you through the beautiful alleys and to the historical monuments, related to the slave trade. You will learn about local traditions and visit important sites such as the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, Markiti Old market and various museums. That Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site may not surprise you…
Our local guide knows the city inside out and will show you the most beautiful and hidden places. At the end of this tour you will look with different eyes to this beautiful, peaceful and oldest stone city called ‘Stone Town’.
Did you know that… until the 19th century the town was a very important trading centre for spices? Zanzibar was once the world’s largest producer of cloves and its history was heavily influenced by this. The Zanzibar Islands are still sometimes called ‘Islands of the Spice’, due to the large-scale production of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and other spices.
Overall, this is the perfect combination for anyone looking to delve into the history, culture and natural beauty of Zanzibar. From the majestic beauty of Stone Town with its winding alleyways and iconic architecture to the aromatic spices of Kizimbani, this incredible combination allows visitors to experience a wide range of sights, smells and sounds that are unique and special to Zanzibar.
