Since most parts of Mafia Island are part of the conservation area. All visitors and guests to Mafia Island Marine Park are requested to pay a fee of $23.60 per person per day at the entrance gate.

What diving Licence to I need to travel to Mafia Island?

Luckily, you do not need a diving license to enjoy yourself on Mafia Island. There are many beautiful and shallow spots accessible by snorkeling. If you prefer to go a bit deeper, you can try a dive without a diving license under the guidance of an instructor.

For those who do have a diving license, the regular open water license is sufficient for most dive sites, as they are typically between 7 and 20 meters deep. Of course, there are a few spots that are deeper and require an advanced license, but you won’t miss out on anything if you only have your regular open water certification.

Do I need to bring cash and is there an ATM option?

It is critical to keep adequate money on hand for daily needs including meals, transportation, and activities. ATMs are present in Kilidoni Mafia’s capital, however they may occasionally fail or there may be a temporary cash shortage.

How to do get to and get around on Mafia Island?

To reach Mafia Island, most travelers typically fly into Dar es Salaam, which is the main international airport in Tanzania. From there, you can take a flight to Mafia Island. The flight duration is around 30-45 minutes.

Getting around Mafia Island itself is relatively easy. The island is small and can be explored by various means of transportation. The most common mode of transport for short distances is the “bajaj,” which is a three-wheeled auto-rickshaw. Bajajs can be found in Kilindoni and other towns on the island, and they are an affordable and convenient way to get around.

For longer distances or exploring more remote areas, you can best hire a taxi. It’s advisable to negotiate the fare beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings, the road infrastructure on the island may not be as developed as in other areas, so expect some rough patches and bumpy rides, especially when venturing off the main roads.

The name “Mafia” has interesting origins. It is derived from the Arabic word “morfiyeh,” meaning “group” or “archipelago,” as well as the Swahili phrase “mahali pa afya,” which translates to “a healthy dwelling-place.” In 1995, Mafia Island received support from the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to establish a marine wildlife center, marking the establishment of Tanzania’s first Marine Park. This assistance contributed to the conservation efforts and development of the island’s natural marine resources.
