Climb the Ol Doinyo Lengai ‘Mountain of God’

Short overview

Ol Doinyo Lengai, or the ‘Mountain of God’ is a 2960 meter high volcano in Tanzania, located in the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. Did you know that the volcano has more than one active center?

Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano on Earth known to have erupted carbonatite lava, although these rocks make up only a small fraction of the volcano and only occur in the northern crater. The features of Ol Doinyo Lengai’s magmas have been used to simulate the circumstances on carbon planets, which are planets rich in carbon.

Are you ready to climb & explore this fascinating volcano!

Description of Ol Doinyo Lengai Climb

The journey to the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai begins at night. You will be escorted by a local guide who is well-versed in the area.

Because of the loose grit on the mountain, the journey to the top is somewhat difficult, but the view is amazing, and the climb is definitely an experience! Because you hike in the dark, the moonlight makes the journey mystical and unforgettable.

On average, 6 – 8 hours of hiking will get you to the peak. When you reach the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai, you may see lava erupting from the crater! At the top, you can sit on the crater’s edge and watch the most spectacular and baffling sunrise. The view from the peak is breathtaking, something that cannot be described. The descent is less difficult than the ascent, and the vistas are more beautiful. In the west, you can see Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, as well as the Great Rift Valley.

How fit do I need to be?

Do not underestimate this mountain! It is a steep climb with a lot of loose gravel. An intermediate to high level of fitness is recommended to climb this mountain. Do you dare?

What do you need to wear?

The most important thing is to bring good, closed shoes and wear long trousers for the Ol Doiyno Lengai hike. Because of the altitude, an extra set of warm clothes is recommended as well!

*Please note that the daily conditions on the mountain are subject to change. It is important to understand that the guide has the authority to make a decision on-site regarding the possibility of canceling the ascent to the summit.

*This day hike can only be done as part of a complete safari package. It can’t be booked separately as group- or private excursion.
