Step back in time on a guided tour to Chole Island, one of the oldest inhabited islands in the Mafia Archipelago. Explore centuries-old ruins reclaimed by nature, discover Arabic and German influences and witness traditional dhow-building by hand. Along the way, you’ll pass through quiet villages, encounter towering baobab trees, and spot the island’s most famous residents: the Flying Foxes (fruit bats) hanging peacefully in the treetops!
Once the archipelago’s center of trade, Chole Island is rich in both history and natural beauty. Your adventure begins with a short 10-minute boat ride from Mafia Island.
On arrival, your guide will take you on a walk through the island’s villages and shaded paths. You’ll explore ruins dating back to the 12th century, including mosques, a customs house, and a German-era prison, all now overtaken by trees and vines.
You will also visit the dhow-building area, where craftsmen still create traditional sailing boats using hand tools and centuries-old techniques.
The tour continues under the shade of baobab trees, where you’ll see the island’s flying foxes, large fruit bats hanging quietly in the treetops. Your guide will help you spot and observe them respectfully.
After the tour, you’ll return to Mafia Island by boat.
