At the northern tip of Zanzibar, the village of Nungwi is home to the Mnarani Aquarium, a marine turtle conservation lagoon. This community-led project protects endangered sea turtles, rescues injured individuals, and nurtures hatchlings before releasing them back into the Indian Ocean. A visit here offers a short but meaningful glimpse into local conservation efforts and the lives of these gentle marine creatures.
Your visit begins at the lagoon, a natural tidal pool in the coral rock near the Nungwi lighthouse. You will be introduced to the conservation project by local guides who will also explain the threats sea turtles face.
You will have the chance to see turtles of all ages: from tiny hatchlings paddling in the shallows to larger individuals recovering before their release. Visitors can also assist in feeding the turtles seaweed while learning about their behavior and importance in the marine ecosystem.
Every visit directly supports the community’s conservation work.
*Kindly note that children are permitted from age four and above.
