The Kikuletwa Hot Springs (also known as Chemka or Rundugai Hot Springs) is one of the most beautiful and refreshing places in Tanzania. Here, you can swim in crystal-clear, turquoise, warm water. It’s a small oasis in the middle of absolutely nowhere—literally! Simply an amazing experience that’s definitely worth a visit when you’re in Tanzania. From Arusha, the trip takes about 2 hours.
Your journey from Arusha to Kikuletwa Hot Springs begins on the main road towards Moshi or Arusha, depending on your starting point. As we drive along this scenic route, you might catch a glimpse Mount Kilimanjaro. Soon after, we’ll leave the paved road behind and venture onto an adventurous off-road path, leading us deep into the heart of Tanzania’s untamed landscapes.
The rugged track takes you through breathtaking African countryside, passing bushland, dry riverbeds, towering baobab trees, and graceful acacias. This vast region is home to diverse tribes, offering a glimpse into Tanzania’s cultural tapestry as we pass through local communities on our way to the springs.
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a stunning green oasis surrounded by crystal-clear, turquoise waters. Dive in for a refreshing swim, try the rope swing for an adrenaline rush, or simply relax under the shade of the trees. Snorkeling gear is available for rent, allowing you to explore the underwater world.
Kikuletwa Hot Springs is home to the unique Garra Rufa fish, famously known as “doctor fish.” These tiny fish are used in spa treatments worldwide for their natural ability to gently nibble away dead skin, providing a free, natural pedicure. Don’t be surprised if you feel a slight tickle on your feet—it’s all part of the experience! In addition to the doctor fish, you might spot turtles and catfish swimming in the clear waters.
The hot springs goes by many different names: Chemka, Rundugai, Kikuletwa, or even Maji Moto. Don’t worry—it’s all the same place!
The name “Chemka” means boiling in Swahili, describing how the water seems to bubble up from underground. “Maji Moto” simply means hot water.
By combining the Materuni Waterfalls with the Kikuletwa Hotsprings, you can make a fantastic full-day excursion to some of Tanzania’s most impressive natural destinations.
