  • Witness the peak of the flamingo hatching season
  • Watch fresh cardamom being harvested on Zanzibar

What not to miss in December

The herds of the great migration start gathering in Ndutu, the southern Serengeti, in preparation for the calving season. Predator action is high as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards follow the herds.

December marks the end of the yearly cycle, as the great migration of over 2 million wildebeests, along with zebras and gazelles, treks from Ndutu to Southern Kenya and back, following the rains in search of water and fresh grazing grounds.

You can learn more about the migration here.

Birdwatching is at its peak with migratory birds from Europe and Asia. With the rains bringing more insects, bird feeding frenzies become common and unforgettable to witness. Flamingos color soda lakes, like Lake Manyara, Lake Madagi in Ngorongoro, and the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park, pink.

In Lake Natron, the flamingo hatching season is at its peak. The red waters offer an amazing backdrop for spotting the baby chicks.

Due to the rains, the water levels of lakes rise. That means crocodiles can be seen actively exploring new hunting grounds.

The Indian Ocean is warm and perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. You can also enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience of snorkeling with whale sharks! December is one of the top months to snorkel alongside these gentle giants along the coast of Mafia Island. This is because this is in the middle of their stay here (September-March). That means they can be reliably seen compared to September or March, when they may not have arrived yet or have already left.

You can also explore spice farms as they harvest cardamom, a unique seasonal spice tour highlight!

Tanzania in October

The weather in December

December falls in the short rainy season (November-December), which is in between the long dry season (June-October) and the short dry season (January-February). Tanzania also has a long rainy season from March through May.

December brings a mix of warm temperatures, green landscapes, humid air, and short, refreshing showers that cool the air and settle the dust. The warm temperatures are due to Tanzania lying in the Southern Hemisphere. That means that the seasons are reversed, e.g., December is summer and July is winter.

What does that mean for your safari?

The rains usually occur in the afternoon and make the landscape look green and fresh. This does make wildlife a bit harder to spot, since they use it as a cover or to hide from predators. The rainy weather also means that animals are more spread out because they do not have to rely on permanent water sources.

The rains also come in short bursts, which means that unpaved roads remain accessible and won’t disrupt your safari compared to the long rainy season. Since you are not confined to the main roads, you get more chances to track and spot animals.

Along the coast, it is more humid than inland, but the ocean breeze keeps conditions pleasant. The ocean waters are warm and perfect for diving, snorkeling, and swimming.

The Big 5 in December!

The Big Five can be seen year-round in Tanzania, but sightings vary by season. Here’s what you can expect this month and where your chances of spotting each species are highest.

Lions

December is an exciting month for lion sightings as the first newborn wildebeest start appearing toward the end of the month. With prey gathering in the southern Serengeti, lions become more active and easier to spot, often seen stalking through the fresh green grass or resting proudly on rocky kopjes (small, stone hills). Their movements are purposeful, setting the stage for the dramatic calving season that peaks just weeks later.

Leopards

In December, leopards remain visible since they stay in their territories year-round. The short rains bring a flush of greenery, offering them excellent camouflage as they lounge on branches or scan the plains below. Especially in the Serengeti, where tree coverage is abundant.

Fun fact: Mothers keep their cubs hidden in dens until they are about 3 months old.

Elephants

December’s mix of fresh grass and scattered water makes elephants especially widespread across the parks. Tarangire still holds its impressively large elephants, though many of them roam more freely thanks to the renewed vegetation and water sources. They often gather in family groups, feeding on lush shrubs and fresh leaves.

Buffaloes

Buffaloes are abundant and easy to spot in December. With the landscape refreshed by recent rains, herds graze across the open plains. They frequent waterholes and wetlands that begin to refill this time of year, offering dramatic scenes of drinking, wallowing, and social interaction. The green backdrop makes their powerful silhouettes even more striking.

Rhinos

Rhinos remain present year-round, and December offers lovely viewing conditions in the Ngorongoro Crater. The grass is green but still short enough for clear sightings, making this one of the best times to observe them grazing peacefully on the crater floor.

Fun fact: A rhino’s horn is made of keratin, the same protein as human hair, skin, or nails.

Crowds & Costs in December

December offers two very different experiences. In early December there are fewer visitors, quiet parks, better availability, and more attractive rates. Luxury lodges in particular offer attractive discounts. We still recommend booking at least 6 months ahead to secure the best deals.

In late December, the Christmas holidays start. That means peak demand, higher prices, busy lodges and parks, and a festive, lively atmosphere. We recommend booking well in advance, a year ahead. Flights may also be more expensive, but park fees remain the same throughout the year.

If you prefer a more intimate experience, the first half is ideal. If you want holiday energy and community, late December is beautiful.

Tanzania in December: Packing Tips

In December we recommend light, breathable clothing that can handle the warm weather during the day. However, we also suggest bringing a light rain jacket for occasional showers.

If you plan on doing activities such as a walking safari or spice farm tour, we recommend bringing waterproof or resistant shoes. Quick-dry clothing can also be convenient.

What activities are recommended in December?

Arusha, also known as the safari capital, and the surrounding area are amazing when conditions are wet. You can explore the Meserani Snake Park and local cafés and restaurants on rainy afternoons. We recommend a village tour or a city tour, since they are (partially) indoors.

On Zanzibar, you can also enjoy a city tour in Stone Town or enjoy a spice farm tour to see the cardamom harvest!

Is December a good month for photography?

The towering cloud formations, green plains, dust-free air, and bright light combine to create some of the best photo conditions of the year. This is amazing for landscape photography or as a backdrop while capturing wildlife during your safari.

It is also a wonderful time for bird photography with the presence of European and Asian migrants and the peak of the flamingo hatching season.

Is December a good month for a hot air balloon safari?

With the migration in the south and the calving season starting mid-December, it is an amazing time for a balloon safari. Watch baby wildebeests take their first steps, while predators are never far away!

The only downside is that due to winds or rain, the balloon may not be allowed to take off. This is for your safety.

Are there mosquitoes in Tanzania in December?

It is true that mosquitoes are more abundant in the rainy seasons. However, mosquitoes are present all year in Tanzania.

Most safari lodges will provide mosquito nets. It is also always recommended to bring insect repellent with you.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro in December?

With the rainy weather, December is not ideal for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. The trails are slippery and can even be dangerous.

If you want to attempt to summit the roof of Africa this month, the Rongai route generally has less slippery trails since it is on the drier, northern side of the mountain.
