Tanzania in August

Experience golden landscapes, thrilling safaris, and unforgettable wildlife in Tanzania this August

Visit Tanzania in August

August is the heart of the dry season and a time of clear skies, crisp mornings, and spectacular wildlife gatherings. It’s one of the most popular months to visit, and for good reason. August offers everything from thrilling safaris and mountain treks to relaxing days on the beach.

Because water sources become scarce, animals gather around rivers and waterholes, making wildlife encounters frequent and unforgettable. The vegetation is sparse, giving you clear, open views of lions, elephants, giraffes, and so many more beautiful animals.

With dry weather, warm sunshine, and vibrant wildlife, August is a month where every part of Tanzania shines.

Hightlights of August

Short overview
  • Spot dolphins and whales along the coast or watch sea turtles hatching
  • Witness the Mara River crossings with exciting predator action
  • Enjoy the flamingo breeding season in the strikingly red Lake Natron

What not to miss in August

August is one of the best months to witness the famous Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti. Wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles face crocodile-filled waters in one of nature’s most powerful spectacles.

The great migration is a yearly trek of over 2 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, from Ndutu in the southern Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in southern Kenya and back. They follow the rains and thus cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing grounds and water.

You can learn more about the migration here.

August is also an amazing month to spot resident birds like hornbills and brightly colored rollers. Tanzania is also home to 29 species of endemic birds. However, our August bird highlight would have to be the breeding flamingos in Lake Natron. From July to October, over 2.5 million lesser flamingos gather to breed on the exposed alkaline flats of the lake. These flats become exposed due to the intense evaporation during the long dry season. That also means that Natron is at its reddest during this period, offering an amazing backdrop for bird photography!

August is an amazing time to visit the islands! You can watch sea turtles hatching and making their way to the ocean for the first time, spot migrating humpback whales on their way to Antarctica, and snorkel with dolphins! The weather is also ideal for deep-sea fishing and kite- and windsurfing!

August offers dry trails and clear skies, which make for excellent mountain climbing conditions! If a week-long trek up Mount Kilimanjaro isn’t your cup of tea, you can still enjoy beautiful views with a day hike on Kili’s slopes.

Enjoy peaceful paddling with a canoe safari and experience excellent bird and hippo sightings in Lake Manyara or Arusha National Park. In August, the dry weather makes wildlife congregate around permanent water sources, making this an amazing and unique way to spot animals.

Weather in August

August is part of the long dry season (June-October). This means that the weather is dry and warm during the day and cool in the mornings and evenings. There is less humidity than in the rainy seasons, and there is a relatively strong southeastern wind.

The long dry season is in between the long rainy season (March-May) and the short rainy season (November-December). Tanzania also knows a short dry season (January-February).

The temperatures are cooler than in traditional winter months like December because Tanzania lies in the Southern Hemisphere. That means the seasons are reversed.

What does that mean for your safari?

The low humidity and dry weather make for comfortable conditions for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, enjoying the ocean breeze on Zanzibar, and exploring the beautiful national parks with a safari.

The clear skies also make it one of the best months for photography and stargazing. The ocean is also clear, offering amazing visibility for diving and snorkeling.

Due to the warm, dry weather, the vegetation has dried. The short grasses and animals congregating around permanent water sources make spotting wildlife easier and more rewarding.

The park roads are in good condition and thus fully accessible due to the dry weather. The strong wind can cause dust storms, but, along the coast, this is amazing for kite- and windsurfing. This wind, known as the Kusi wind, is constant and great for both beginners and advanced sailors.

The Big 5 in August!

The Big Five can be seen year-round in Tanzania, but sightings vary by season. Here’s what you can expect this month and where your chances of spotting each species are highest.

Lions

August is one of the best months to spot lions. The dry season concentrates wildlife around remaining water sources, and lions take full advantage. They are often seen waiting in the shade near rivers or waterholes for prey to pass by. With grasses at their lowest, visibility is excellent, making it easier to observe their social interactions, hunting behavior, and territorial patrols throughout the day.

Fun fact: Lions are the only big cats that live in groups. These groups are called prides.

Leopards

August is one of the best months to spot leopards in Tanzania. Their territories remain stable year-round, but the little vegetation now makes these elusive cats far easier to spot, especially in the Serengeti’s kopjes (small, rocky hills) areas. As the landscape becomes increasingly dry, leopards are often seen draped over tree branches or moving silently along riverbanks in search of prey.

Elephants

Elephants are highly visible in August as the dry season continues. Large family groups gather around permanent water sources, and their movements become more predictable, often traveling between water and dependable feeding grounds. Watching these giants navigate the dry, dusty landscape is a highlight of safaris in August. Especially in Tarangire, famous for its larger individuals.

Buffaloes

August is an excellent month for buffalo sightings. With shrinking water sources, large herds congregate in open areas and around rivers, creating impressive scenes of dust and movement. The dry conditions make them easier to track, and their sheer numbers often attract lions, leading to exciting and dramatic predator-prey interactions. Their presence adds an imposing, rugged feel to the landscape and your safari.

Rhinos

In August, rhino sightings remain most reliable in the Ngorongoro Crater. The dry season improves visibility across the open plains, making it easier to spot them grazing, resting in the sun, or even taking a mud bath. Although still rare and elusive, August often provides clearer, longer sightings thanks to the sparse vegetation. Seeing a rhino against the golden backdrop of the crater is a truly special moment.

Crowds & Costs in August

August is high season in Tanzania and one of the busiest months of the year due to the excellent weather and school holidays. Most lodges and camps are full, especially around the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, so book well in advance to get your top picks. We recommend booking a year in advance.

Prices for lodges are at their highest, but the quality of experiences and sightings makes it more than worth it. Flight tickets are also more expensive in the high seasons (June-October and December-February). Please keep in mind that park fees remain the same throughout the year.

Tanzania in August: Packing Tips

August has cool but sunny weather. We recommend breathable clothing that can be layered and a thin jacket or sweater for the colder temperatures in the mornings and evenings. We also recommend bringing sun protection, like a hat, especially around the coast.

The dry landscapes in combination with the strong winds can cause dust clouds. We recommend packing a scarf to keep the dust out of your face during safaris.

Which activities are recommended in August?

The weather in August is amazing! We recommend a walking safari in Arusha National Park or a crater rim hike in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. With the clear skies you will be able to see the beautiful landscape of the crater floor.

We also recommend cultural tours. Spend a day with the Maasai or hunt with the Hadzabe for a glimpse into Tanzania’s ancient traditions. You can also learn how to cook Tanzanian dishes from local mammas or sip on a fresh cup of coffee during a coffee tour!

Is August a good month for photography?

August is an amazing month for wildlife photography, both on the mainland and along the coast. With clear skies and waters, you will get the chance to capture wildebeests crossing the Mara River, baby sea turtles hatching from their eggs, and breeding flamingos in the beautifully red Lake Natron.

What can I do/visit to escape the crowds?

If you prefer a quieter, more personal experience, visit less-crowded parks like Enduimet WMA, which offer excellent safaris away from the main routes. In this wildlife management area you can enjoy walking safaris and even explore the plains on a motorcycle or quad.

If you plan on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, try less-visited routes like LemoshoShiraRongai, or Umbwe.

You can also climb Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Lengai, or Mount Longido for an even more off-the-beaten-path experience.

Another pro is that less popular activities are generally less expensive while still offering amazing experiences!

Are there mosquitoes in Tanzania in August?

Even though they are more abundant during the rainy seasons (November-December and March-May), mosquitoes are present year-round in Tanzania. Most safari lodges provide mosquito nets, and it is always recommended to bring insect repellent.

Is it possible to do a balloon safari in August?

August is one of the best months for a hot air balloon safari above the Serengeti. The skies are clear, and there is more than enough to see during the Mara River crossings. From exciting predator action to impressive escapes.

Please keep in mind that, for your safety, the balloon might not be allowed to take off due to the strong winds.
